This charming handmade bureau had been left in a shed and was in a pitiful state when it came to us, but one look at its sad little face and I knew it was worth the work to revive it into a piece which can be loved for decades to come. There were many repairs and a lot of prep to be had here, but once that was out of the way we got onto the fun stuff. This piece dates back to the very early 1900s, and was clearly handmade by some ingenious chap or chapess. This is evident in the fact that there is barely a straight angle on the thing, and with this in mind I opted to embrace those wonky bones and go for a characterful distressed finish. After much deliberation the bureau received a couple of coats of soft grey mineral paint by Fusion and the piece was then quite heavily distressed in places where you would expect to find natural wear. I wanted to keep some obvious age, and I think the slightly timeworn look suits perfectly. The hardwearing paint was topped with a specially blended beeswax finish to give it the lightest of sheens and a softer feel. Of course one of the real talking points here is the decoupage work, which was achieved using pages from a vintage book of British birds and brings a fresh and fun hidden hit of individuality.

With three drawers for storage and a drop front to provide the perfect spot to pop your laptop or jot a note, this thoroughly unique bureau remains a relevant and useful piece of furniture.
